Busy, Busy...and loving it!

Hey everyone...It has been an amazingly busy couple of weeks. Since Justin's class' cultural celebration, we have been very involved with school events.

I hope I can remember them all as I list them...and this is in as close to chronological order as I can recall:

- Fri 15 Oct. - Helped the Junior class cook and serve dinner for the first big fundraiser of the year.

- Sat 16 Oct. - Had dinner with the pastor of the church we have been attending and his lovely family. We had lots of fun watching football/soccer, talking theology and politics...They from England and its interesting to get a bit of insight to British politics and the British outlook (at least his version) on American politics.

- Sun 17 Oct. - Laundry and Church

- Mon 18 Oct. - Rebecca went out with a friend and I went to a support raising support group with some of the other missionary staff at the school.

- Tue 19 Oct. - Rebecca went to the consulate to get an important document ordered for Justin and Rebecca's visa...the initial application was denied to to a expired date on a background check.

- Wed 20 Oct. - Bible Study with some neighbors/fellow staff and a couple from church.

- Thur 21 Oct. - End of the 1st Quarter. ICSV sponsored a seminar on "communicating cross-culturally" given by Michael Gates. No school on Friday so Justin spent the night at a friend's house and we went downtown to the seminar. Justin had a great time and we enjoyed the seminar.

- Fri 22 Oct. - Non student day. Scheduled as a work day for us teachers but I got ZERO work done aside from inputting grades. Mostly because I received a email response that made me really happy...long and short of it is that a band that I enjoyed during my high school days (The Insyderz) will be coming to Vienna to play a show hosted by ICSV! This of course led to a flurry of emails in oder to get the concert marketed and so I could find housing/beds for 19 people. Finished off the day with dinner with some friends from school who had visitors in town. Meat on a sword again...can't beat it!

- Sat 23 Oct. - No internet (had to go to school to check emails), Laundry, and dinner with the Gardners

- Sun 24 Oct. - Still no internet, Finished laundry, Started our house/dog sitting assignment at the Mason's, Church

- Mon 25 Oct. - No School, walked the dog, and watched movies...ALL DAY (not the walking the dog part, that only happened a couple of times)! What a relaxing day.

- Tues 26 Oct. - Today! Its a national holiday in Austria celebrating the day the last Allied soldier left Austrian soil and end of the Allied occupation after WWII. More movies today and did some work in preparation for the week.

All in all, its been a great week and a half since the last post. We have had great opportunities to minister to our students and coworkers, and have had our ministry validated in many ways. Within all that we have been doing, we have had great opportunities to rest, relax, and recharge.

So I ask that you continue to pray for and with us. Pray that we will have strength and energy through the upcoming school week as, even though its a shortened week, there is much to do within the short time frame. Pray for me as I work to make the concert on Tuesday a success. I know God is bringing these bands to Vienna for a reason and I pray that all the students and young people from throughout Vienna will be prepared to hear the Gospel message through the songs they play and the testimonies they share.

  2. You've been busy! It sounds wonderful! I hope being with the puupy was as fun as you had hoped. Was it really as big as I've heard? I can't imagine! Take good care and I'll continue to hold you prayer as always!

  3. It was very fun...although since it is a puppy it was like taking care of a two year old :). He is pretty big...he is only 5 months old and he is already as big as Casper, I think the dog (Chester) weighs 50 lbs or so already...

Who are these kids at ICSV...

Hi everyone... The first week and a half of school has been absolutely amazing! We have had some great opportunities to begin building lasting relationships with the students that God has brought to Vienna to be educated at the International Christian School of Vienna. Rebecca has been adjusting well to her role as secondary secretary. She is learning quickly the many demands of her new role and is doing quite well in supporting us teachers and the rest of the staff. Rebecca hard at work I have been really enjoying my classes. I have a total of 43 students spread out over 4 periods. The students I have represent 14 different home nations, with many of the students who are "Austrian" are first generation, so they are of other nationalities as well.  I have also had the opportunity to begin working with the soccer team...again, many nationalities are represented on the field, truly an international squad. Here are some pictures of the team training at the local club

Almost a Year - A reflective poem by Rebecca

It’s been almost a year since we got on the plane. Knowing that we were leaving friends and family; we would never be the same. What has it been like leaving everything we know? Laughter and tears; sun and snow. Up and down; love and fear. All while trusting God for the reason we are here. Relying on support and prayers from the ones you care for, Though scary, freeing, challenging; it means relying on God even more. I’m so thankful to be part of a team who sees that Christ is our need Whether they can see the impact first hand or not, they have blessed students at ICSV. The students and families are so precious, eager to learn and understand What it means to love the Lord with all their hearts and to follow His command. At times I feel so left alone and wondering why God has called me here But then I talk to a student, or go to a school event, that’s when it all becomes clear. God never said life would be easy or even how we think it might be We just need to rely on Him, as He

Clowns and Hospitals

Many of you might remember the 1998 film starring Robin Williams that chronicled the early career of Hunter "Patch" Adams. He began using humor as therapy in his sessions and opened a free hospital in West Virginia. Here is a clip from the film... Fast forward 13 years to a hospital in Vienna, Austria...to a children's surgery ward. As we were sitting talking with some visitors we noticed Justin had more visitors... They proceeded to hand out musical instruments; here's the problem...this was less than 12 hours after Justin's surgery. It really hurt him to laugh at this point...and he still felt horrible After that nonsense, the clowns made 2 more appearances; once when they delivered lunch, and once later in the day when we had our friend Tom Mason visiting. Tom is a fellow missionary serving as a pastor at a local church and a teacher at ICSV. He is also a amateur magician. Pictures of him doing tricks have found their way onto this blog
