The launch of the KBI, Part 2: The Spirit and the Word and how GCF knows no borders

A couple of years ago I started meeting with a couple of friends at ICSV for a weekly discipleship/accountability/bible study time. We soon started calling this meeting time "GCF", short for Good Christian Fellowship. The reason behind the name is not important, and really is an inside joke that none of you would find funny anyways...but, I will be referring to it throughout this post so I figured I'd at least give a cursory explanation. I really appreciated this time because it gave us a chance to encourage one another in the Word and share what God was teaching us. This time and these guys is one of the things I was most saddened by leaving behind. Well, turns out that God will still use the GCF guys to encourage each other, even if we are on different continents.

I began reading through 1 Thessalonians while we were doing the camp in Hungary...and at the same time, Pete (my colleague with Global Baseball) and I were talking a lot about the challenges, shortfalls, and benefits of short term missions and how we could best use STMs for the glory of God in the context of Global Baseball's activities.

So...as I began to read I was struck by a couple of things. The great part about all this, was that the Word of God was directly speaking to where we were at in terms of prep and implementation of the camp activities.

First was the idea that the role of short termers and supporters should be to exhort and encourage (chapter 2:1-13ish). This was/is great guide for short term ministry and should be a constant reminder for all who participate in STMs. It was especially helpful as we were leading a group of "short termers". And then I got a chance to share this encouragement with a church fellowship in Gjakova.

And then...after we arrived in Kosovo, things started to get a little difficult.

And by "a little" I mean that EVERY. SINGLE. PLAN. that we had made was being changed.

Hours of prep were being thrown away to be replaced by a half hour of frantic revisions. And again, the word was there (3:1-5) to remind me that these challenges and afflictions were always gonna happen. And like the Thessalonians, we had warning, but sometimes despite the warnings these challenges take us by surprise. But it is the faithful prayer and exhortation of believers that the Lord provides for us to get through it.

All well and good. I was feeling better. Happy thoughts and all that.

But then it became REAL.

It was at this point in the story that I received a message from my friend (and former pastor in Vienna) , Tom. He was checking in on me and wanted to see how things were going in Kosovo. As I shared some of the challenges with him, he typed that he wanted to encourage me with a word from scripture.

The passage he wanted to share?

1 Thess 2:17-3:13. Of course.

Even now as I look back at our Facebook chat exchange I get goose bumps...turns out we had both been reading through it and led to it by the Holy Spirit.

The key of all this is that the evil one will try to thwart what God is doing through His people. But God in his sovereignty continues to use His people to encourage one another in Faith.

GCF is a real need. Having close friends who pray for and encourage you are an amazing blessing.

No matter what continent they might be on.

Who are these kids at ICSV...

Hi everyone... The first week and a half of school has been absolutely amazing! We have had some great opportunities to begin building lasting relationships with the students that God has brought to Vienna to be educated at the International Christian School of Vienna. Rebecca has been adjusting well to her role as secondary secretary. She is learning quickly the many demands of her new role and is doing quite well in supporting us teachers and the rest of the staff. Rebecca hard at work I have been really enjoying my classes. I have a total of 43 students spread out over 4 periods. The students I have represent 14 different home nations, with many of the students who are "Austrian" are first generation, so they are of other nationalities as well.  I have also had the opportunity to begin working with the soccer team...again, many nationalities are represented on the field, truly an international squad. Here are some pictures of the team training at the local club

Almost a Year - A reflective poem by Rebecca

It’s been almost a year since we got on the plane. Knowing that we were leaving friends and family; we would never be the same. What has it been like leaving everything we know? Laughter and tears; sun and snow. Up and down; love and fear. All while trusting God for the reason we are here. Relying on support and prayers from the ones you care for, Though scary, freeing, challenging; it means relying on God even more. I’m so thankful to be part of a team who sees that Christ is our need Whether they can see the impact first hand or not, they have blessed students at ICSV. The students and families are so precious, eager to learn and understand What it means to love the Lord with all their hearts and to follow His command. At times I feel so left alone and wondering why God has called me here But then I talk to a student, or go to a school event, that’s when it all becomes clear. God never said life would be easy or even how we think it might be We just need to rely on Him, as He

Clowns and Hospitals

Many of you might remember the 1998 film starring Robin Williams that chronicled the early career of Hunter "Patch" Adams. He began using humor as therapy in his sessions and opened a free hospital in West Virginia. Here is a clip from the film... Fast forward 13 years to a hospital in Vienna, Austria...to a children's surgery ward. As we were sitting talking with some visitors we noticed Justin had more visitors... They proceeded to hand out musical instruments; here's the problem...this was less than 12 hours after Justin's surgery. It really hurt him to laugh at this point...and he still felt horrible After that nonsense, the clowns made 2 more appearances; once when they delivered lunch, and once later in the day when we had our friend Tom Mason visiting. Tom is a fellow missionary serving as a pastor at a local church and a teacher at ICSV. He is also a amateur magician. Pictures of him doing tricks have found their way onto this blog
